Episode 8: Kidney Stone Myths – “Beer Helps Flush Episode 8: Kidney Stone Myths – “Beer Helps Flush Out Kidney Stones.”

Myth: Drinking beer or alcohol is a good way to pass kidney stones.

Fact: No. Beer is not a treatment for kidney stones.

While beer may temporarily increase urine output, it does not dissolve stones or reliably help them pass.

In fact, alcohol can:
1. Lead to dehydration if not balanced with adequate water intake
2. Worsen pain and delay recovery in some situations
3. Give a false sense of security, causing people to delay proper medical treatment

If a stone is large, causing severe pain, infection, or blocking urine flow, beer won’t fix the problem, it may make things worse by delaying appropriate care.

The best “drink” for preventing kidney stones is still:
Plenty of water
A balanced diet
A personalised prevention plan based on your stone type and metabolic evaluation

Have you ever heard someone say, “Just drink a few beers—it’ll flush the stone out”? Tell me in the comments.

Episode 7: Kidney Stone Myths – “If You Have Kidne Episode 7: Kidney Stone Myths – “If You Have Kidney Stones, You Must Never Eat Spinach Again.”

Myth: Spinach is completely off-limits if you’ve had kidney stones.

Fact: It’s not that simple.

Spinach is one of the highest oxalate-containing foods, so if you form calcium oxalate stones—the most common type of kidney stone, it may be wise to limit spinach, especially in large quantities.

But that doesn’t mean everyone with kidney stones should avoid it forever.

The right advice depends on:
1. Your stone composition
2. Your 24-hour urine test results
3. Your individual metabolic risk factors

If you do eat spinach, pairing it with a calcium-rich food like curd or milk during the same meal can help reduce oxalate absorption from the intestine.

Remember: Personalised nutrition is far more effective than unnecessary food restrictions.

Have you stopped eating spinach because of kidney stones? Tell me in the comments!

Episode 6: Kidney Stone Myths – “Every Kidney Ston Episode 6: Kidney Stone Myths – “Every Kidney Stone Needs Surgery.”

Myth: If you have a kidney stone, surgery is the only treatment.

Fact: Not every kidney stone needs surgery.

Many small stones—especially those less than 4-5 mm—can pass naturally with adequate hydration, pain control, and medications prescribed by your urologist.

Surgery is usually considered when:
1. The stone is too large to pass
2. Pain is severe or persistent
3. There is an associated infection
4. The stone is blocking urine flow
5. Kidney function is at risk

Today, most stone procedures are minimally invasive, with no large cuts, faster recovery, and excellent outcomes.

The right treatment depends on the stone’s size, location, composition, symptoms, and your overall health—not just the presence of a stone.

Were you surprised to learn that many kidney stones don’t need surgery? Let me know in the comments.

Episode 5: Kidney Stone Myths – “Once My Stone Is Episode 5: Kidney Stone Myths – “Once My Stone Is Removed, It Will Never Come Back.”

Myth: Surgery removes the stone, so the problem is solved forever.

Fact: Surgery removes the stone, but it doesn’t always remove the reason why the stone formed.

Without identifying and treating the underlying cause, kidney stones can come back. In fact, up to 50% of patients may develop another stone within 5–10 years if preventive measures aren’t taken.

The good news? Most recurrences can be significantly reduced with:
1. Adequate hydration
2. Personalised dietary changes
3. Stone analysis and 24-hour urine evaluation
4. Medications, when indicated
5. Regular follow-up

The goal isn’t just to remove today’s stone, it’s to prevent tomorrow’s.

Is HoLEP safe for high-risk patients? Yes. ✔️ Fo Is HoLEP safe for high-risk patients?

Yes. ✔️

For patients with conditions like diabetes, heart disease, or other medical risks, HoLEP (Holmium Laser Enucleation of Prostate) is considered a safe and effective minimally invasive option when properly evaluated ✨

Episode 4: Kidney Stone Myths – “Kidney Stones Onl Episode 4: Kidney Stone Myths – “Kidney Stones Only Affect Older People.”

Myth: Kidney stones are a disease of old age.

Fact: Kidney stones can occur at any age—from children and teenagers to young adults and the elderly.

In fact, I’m seeing more young patients in their 20s and 30s with kidney stones than ever before.

Why?
1. Poor hydration
2. Processed and high-salt diets
3. Sugary beverages
4. Sedentary lifestyle
5. Family history and metabolic disorders

Age doesn’t protect you from kidney stones—your lifestyle and underlying risk factors matter much more.

If you’ve had one stone, don’t wait for another. A proper evaluation can help identify the cause and significantly reduce your risk of recurrence.

At what age did you or someone you know develop a kidney stone? Share your experience in the comments.

Episode 3- Kidney Stone Myths – Does Drinking More Episode 3- Kidney Stone Myths – Does Drinking More Water Dissolve Kidney Stones?

One of the biggest myths I hear is:

“Doctor, if I drink lots of water, my kidney stone will dissolve.”

Not true.

Water does not dissolve existing kidney stones. But it is the single most effective way to prevent new stones from forming and can help small stones pass more easily.

The goal isn’t just to drink “more” water—it’s to drink enough to produce at least 2–2.5 litres of urine every day.

A simple tip: Your urine should be pale yellow or almost clear most of the time.

Remember:
Water helps prevent stones.
Water doesn’t melt or dissolve stones that are already there.

If you’ve had one kidney stone, you’re at a higher risk of developing another. A proper metabolic evaluation and personalized prevention plan can make all the difference.

How much water do you drink in a day? Let me know in the comments!
